Obviously we don't live in Aberdeen alone. Time to introduce our parents, Mama and Papa!
Mama says...
We were already living as expats when we found out we were expecting. We were in beautiful Cape Town, one of my favorite places in the world. Papa had been living and working there in the oil industry since 2010. We needed a change, though, so Papa got a new job which required us to relocate to Luanda, Angola, but we didn't stay long! Before we knew it, the company was undergoing policy changes that would not allow an employee's pregnant spouse to stay in the country, due to malaria and other health risks. So I went back home to Oklahoma for my first doctor visit, while Papa stayed in Luanda to work until we got our next location sorted out. The plan was for me to stay with my mother and then meet him in our new place. I'd go back to the States to have the baby.
Of course, things rarely go as planned, especially when you're waiting on other people, paperwork, work visas, etc. Plus, at my first ultrasound, I found out we were having twins! It was such a shock, and one that I shared with Papa via FaceTime. Since we still didn't have a new place to live, Papa came to visit regularly, racking up the frequent flier miles each time he made the 14 hour trip (one way). Even though it was stressful at the time, it all turned out for the best. Papa finally made it to our new place in Aberdeen, and he even got to take three weeks off for the twins' birth, and then again when they were old enough and I had recuperated enough to make the trip.
